My Rating - 4/5
Author - Andy Weir
This book is about survival on Mars. Mark Watney is left behind on Mars, all his crewmates think he's dead. Lucky for him he's alive! But no one other than himself knows about it for a long time.
The good thing is that he's an expert mechanic and botanist. These two skills are his right and left hand for Mars survival 101. He undergoes an extremely difficult journey in staying alive and trying to contact Earth somehow. He successfully grows potatoes on Mars thus becoming the first person to colonize Mars. But a breach ends up destroying most of his crops later. With very little supply of food and water he does manage to contact Earth at a later stage. And the people on Earth also try their best to bring him back. The mistake they did was to not inform his crewmates, who are returning to Earth, who still think he's dead. The situation takes a sharp turn when his crewmates finally get to know that he's alive.
The book is fast paced and filled with humour along the way. Though stranded on Mars, Mark does have a great sense of humour. Along with witty remarks the book is overflowing with science facts, which is great for all sci-fi lovers. The other good thing the book contains is suspense. All the hurdles thrown by Mars at Mark is interesting and the route he takes in skipping and avoiding them is a relief to the reader’s mind.
Overall, it's an amazing sci-fi book that will make the readers turn the pages quickly than ever for the sake of Mark. The amount of research put into this book is mind blowing. It is recommended for sci-fi geeks, astro-geeks and anyone who loves science. It is absolutely worth reading.
